Hooked Like Helen | On Our Radar
We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Cleveland, Ohio’s own Hooked Like Helen. We’re so excited to share our conversation.
Moredopemusic: What’s your earliest memory of music, and how did it shape your relationship with it?
Hooked Like Helen (Nikki): My earliest memory of music is hearing Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" as an instrumental demo on my older sister's 1986 Yamaha PSS-270 keyboard. The different synth sounds and pads drew pictures in my mind of colorful shapes and streaks of light that floated in and out to the rhythm of the song. It was my first experience of chromesthesia that I can remember as well. I still love that song!
Moredopemusic: What current project or release are you most excited about right now?
Hooked Like Helen: We are SO excited about our forthcoming EP, Lend Me Your Ear. It has 5 tracks, all songs that we've played live and that our fans have been very patiently waiting for us to release. We collabed with some REALLY talented people on this EP, including the incredible K Thrash (MGK, Blink-182, etc) and we can't wait for the world to hear it!
Moredopemusic: What message or emotion do you hope people take away from your music?
Hooked Like Helen: Hope. I hope that people take away the message of hope from our music. Because even though we often delve into subject matter like trauma, mental illness and addiction, we are living proof that there are brighter days ahead if you keep pushing through the pain and learn to love yourself!
Moredopemusic: What’s a lesson the music industry has taught you that you think every artist should know?
Hooked Like Helen: No one is coming to save you. Don't wait for anyone else to do anything for you, don't wait to be discovered. Don't slow down for anyone. Keep going, keep pushing, keep climbing and grinding! You are your own best advocate, always!
Moredopemusic: If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would it be and why?
Hooked Like Helen: We'd love to collab with Yungblud. That would be SO epic! We love his music and raw vocals, his energy, his rock and roll spirit, and his presence. I feel like we could do a hell of a collab if every given the opportunity!
