Wyatt Goad | On Our Radar
We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Gainesville, Georgia’s own Watt Goad. We’re so excited to share our conversation.
Moredopemusic: Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?
Wyatt Goad: Looking back at the folks who’ve really inspired me, it’s definitely a blend. I love the timeless sound of folk and Americana artist, most notably Tyler Childers, Sierra Ferrell, and John Prine. For the process of writing lyrics, Rap and R&B artist always do it better in my opinion so listening to guys like Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, or MF Doom really helped me conceptualize lyrics and write songs that felt liked they flow.
Moredopemusic: Do you prefer collaborating with others or creating solo—and why?
Wyatt Goad: I feel collaboration is one of the more important parts of creating music. Coming from a background in film and television, my whole job was collaboration so taking the leap to pursue music I’ve definitely transferred over those practices of endless collaboration, because at the end of the day I’m only one guy with limited influences of what sounds I know or which words I can rhyme so it helps to get more than one brain on a project.
Moredopemusic: What artists—past or present—inspire you creatively today?
Wyatt Goad: Tyler Childers has to be my biggest inspiration. I covered his song Jersey Giant and it did surprisingly well in the country music scene. His raw vocals, timeless Americana sound, and lyrical style really scratches the brain nice and inspires me to create, to dig deep and look into my core and produce authentic and unique music.
Moredopemusic: How do you balance the creative side of being an artist with the business side?
Wyatt Goad: I’ve kinda lucked out in this department as I’ve worked in marketing and starting a business so it feels like second nature. I feel I can balance it well after I put into practice that I need to sell my music or my image as a business and market myself how I would say a coffee shop.
Moredopemusic: If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would it be and why?
Wyatt Goad: My dream artist to collaborate with would have to be either Jesse Welles, Sierra Ferrel, or The Chicks.
